Does anyone recall the title of the Clarke story about reincarnation? It involves babies being born with no animation (soul) the Hindu OB/GYN who is the protagonist concludes that the population has reached a critical level where there are more bodies than souls, resulting in these shells being born. At the conclusion it is implied that he will committ suicide to free up a soul for rebirth.
